"…saxophonist and arranger Maxwell Davis whom songwriters Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, in their joint autobiography Hound Dog, called ‘truly one of the unsung heroes of early rhythm and blues’.
He toured with Louis Jordan, played in and arranged for Amos Milburn’s studio band, and wrote Milburn’s greatest hit, Bad Bad Whiskey. More significantly he worked as an A&R man and music director for Aladdin Records and later for Modern Records, where his smooth sax arrangements behind such mid-50’s acts as the Teen Queens (“Eddie My Love”) and The Cliques (“Girl Of My Dreams”) became a signature sound.”
